Meet Our Students

Red Oaks has worked hard for years to develop a series of programs that supports youth from infancy to adulthood to foster a deep and lasting connection to nature and community. This is unique in the forest school movement and supports the research that the long-lasting benefits of nature connection come from continued engagement throughout the lifetime of the child supported by peers, mentors, and their families. It is a long-term investment with transformative results.

Our unique series of programming builds on our years of experience, and the research on environmental literacy and childhood development.

Our Acorns are the first seeds that are planted at Red Oaks. From infancy to age 5 or 6, we focus on developing empathy and compassion for nature and each other through exploration and play. This is an important nurturing time to build strong roots. Programs to support our Acorns include Forest Families and Mighty Acorns.

Our Chipmunks, ages 5-7, are quick and adventurous, always eager to explore their surroundings. At this stage we focus on fostering curiosity and confidence as they begin to explore the world around them. Programs supporting the Chipmunks include STEAM, Humanities, and Forest Friends.

Our Flying Squirrels, ages 8-10, glide from tree-to-tree, spreading joy and invoking wonder across the forest. Children this age need strong relationships with peers and mentors. They are eager to learn more about the world around them, strengthening their independence and knowledge of the natural world. Programs supporting Flying Squirrels include STEAM, Humanities, and Forest Friends.

Our Blue Jays, ages 11-13, are inquisitive and peer-oriented, ready to take on challenges that expand their horizon and deepen friendships. At this level, students begin deeper investigations into nature and participate in team-based problem solving. Programs supporting Blue Jays include STEAM, Humanities, Taking Flight Next Level, and Conservation Club.

Our Bobcats, ages 14-18, are strong, determined, and growing into independent leaders. They begin designing their own projects to make stronger and healthier ecosystems and communities. They lead our younger students with the knowledge and experience they have gained. Programs supporting our Bobcats include STEAM, Humanities, Taking Flight Next Level, and Conservation Club.

Our Trailblazers are a unique group of mixed-age kids who learn from each other and teach each other through the lens of diversity and overcoming adversity. Our Trailblazers program focuses on understanding of people from diverse backgrounds through storytelling and shared experience. Trailblazers is its own program for children ages 7+.
