About this program
Nature provides so much inspiration for the arts as well as the perfect immersive experience to learn about the cultures that make up Appalachia today, as well as those from the past. Humanities was designed to create additional educational support for families seeking a deeper dive into literature, arts, music, Indigenous cultures, and instill a love of place for Appalachia.
Each session, students will have time with various learning stations that include storytelling, creative writing, nature journaling, art technique and instruction, and music exploration. Students will arrive at 10 am and rotate in age-appropriate pods between stations until 1 pm. During this time, parents are welcome to wander around the site for their own time in nature or build community but must remain on-site in case of an emergency.
From 1-3 pm, students are encouraged to engage in free play with mixed-aged children promoting a suite of executive function skills like communication, teamwork, problem-solving, game creation, compassion, child-led exploration, and more. During this time, parents are responsible for their children’s location and safety.
This program is popular for homeschooling families, though we welcome all learners to join us. Our Humanities families also have access to a private Facebook group where we post announcements and discuss each day’s learning objectives and activities. Email newsletters are also an option for those without social media to keep up with our students daily activities.
Our other homeschool enrichment opportunities include STEAM, Forest Friends and all of our Adventures.
